synthesis – why go to war? – define winning

SEATTLE, Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ — The following blog post was published October 3, 2009, by Shafeen Charania, author of the synthesis blog, winner of the 2008 Weblog award for best new blog, and Time.com’s 25 best blogs of 2009.

Clarity of purpose is the cornerstone of successful leadership. The more specific you are about what, how, and when, the more likely you are to achieve outcomes. Without clear guidance, a team flounders. Without clear guidance, a nation can flounder as well. Take the “war” in Afghanistan. What is success? Is it the eradication of the Taliban? Al Qaeda?

If the goal is to eliminate terrorism, we should stop and ask ourselves how that work began in the United States of America with the (ongoing) elimination of terrorism against black (and other) people.

As America’s leadership deliberates its strategy, it should realize that thus far, the only nation to declare war is the United States.
