CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 2, 2003--Vocera Communications, Inc., a wireless voice communications company, today announced it has secured additional funding from corporate investors, including Cisco Systems, Inc. and the Intel Communications Fund. These additional funds will be used to further enhance and expand the advanced capabilities for the Vocera Communications System. Since its inception in March 2002, Vocera has raised $31.3 million in funding.
The Vocera solution enables mobile workers within buildings or campuses to instantly connect and communicate with one another using simple voice commands. The Vocera Communications System combines the leading-edge technologies of wireless LAN, Voice over IP, and speech recognition.
"Intel's investment in Vocera is part of our strategy to accelerate the innovative use of wireless networks in the evolving modular network," said Denis Aull, General Manager of Intel's Network Building Block Division. "Our investment in Vocera is a great example of our effort to expand the Wi-Fi ecosystem and further the development of standards-based, converged voice communications solutions."
The Vocera Communications System consists of Vocera Server Software and Vocera Communications Badges, which operate over the 802.11b wireless LAN. The Badge weighs less than 2 ounces and can be clipped to a shirt pocket or collar, or worn on a lanyard, enabling instant, hands-free communication.
"Vocera has created a new communications experience that solves real communication problems in hospitals, retail stores, and manufacturing environments." says Julie Shimer, CEO of Vocera Communications. "Funding from these corporate investors will help Vocera and its communications solution become even more successful in this emerging market."
Since Vocera started shipping product in October 2002, it has installed its system in leading hospitals, including Denver Health Medical Center, Long Beach Memorial, and El Camino Hospital, and retail companies, including Target Corporation.
