SANRAD iSCSI SAN Solution Takes Flight With Germania Airlines

Posted on: Monday, 18 July 2005, 12:00 CDT

SANRAD Incorporated, a leader in developing and delivering intelligent iSCSI SAN solutions, today announced that Germania Airlines, serving commuter air travelers to and from 17 cities in seven European nations, has implemented an iSCSI IP SAN solution built around SANRAD's V-Switch 3000 and eSeSIX SATA disk arrays.

Germania's direct-attached storage architecture could no longer keep up with the airline's rapid expansion and increasing need for fast, continuous access to mission-critical data. Without the ability to guarantee uninterrupted access to growing data volumes and applications on a long-term basis, Germania decided to consolidate servers and data in a single, centralized IT location in Berlin. It adopted a 1 GB Ethernet iSCSI SAN featuring SANRAD V-Switches and dual eSeSIX MORPHOIS FC/SATA disk arrays in an active/active configuration for high availability.

After successful testing of the system, which performed at a higher level than required by Germania's IT department, the conversion to the iSCSI SAN was completed and operational in just half a day. The IP SAN at Germania has 1.3 TB fully mirrored capacity and another 1.3 TB administered as a backup area. The current volume used is 345 gigabytes.

"The central storage virtualization via the SANRAD V-Switches has proven to be a major benefit in the transition to the operational phase," said Maik Ihle, Germania IT Systems. "We were able to migrate the individual applications, such as the SQL database and document management, to the iSCSI SAN environment on a step-by-step basis without affecting the normal operation of the system."

Future expansion of the SAN infrastructure at Germania will include utilizing SANRAD switches for multi-pathing, increasing the failover capability of the entire system, as well as utilizing snapshot technology to record point-in-time data images that can be quickly backed up and restored in the iSCSI SAN so that these storage management processes do not affect the operation of the network.

"Prior to adopting an iSCSI SAN solution, each of Germania's application servers wrote data to their own direct-attached storage, which meant that disks had to be added to locations that had exhausted their capacity, while available resources at other locations went under-utilized," said Zophar Sante, Vice President of Market Development at SANRAD. "By implementing a solution with V-Switches in place, Germania is able to curtail equipment and management costs while ensuring centralized virtualization and high availability of their network."
