Wren's School Security Blogger Serves as 'Principal for a Day' at South Atlanta School of Law and Social Justice

Bret Rachlin observes "day in the life of a principal" as part of city-wide educational event; Wren to serve as security resource for school

ATLANTA, Nov. 5 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Wren®, providers of physical security solutions that create safe learning environments, recently sent Bret Rachlin, its director of marketing and Network Video + Education blogger to experience the role of "principal" at the South Atlanta School of Law and Social Justice.

The switch - from corporate marketing to education - was part of the "Principal for a Day" (PFAD) program through the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and Atlanta Public Schools. Now in its 10th year, PFAD provides an opportunity for "volunteer principals" to enter Atlanta schools' classrooms and observe a day in the life of the principal.

Rachlin shadowed Principal Peter McKnight for the day, and discusses in his latest blog posting, "Principal for a Day" what an extremely busy and multi-faceted day the principal has: "From the moment students walk in the door in the morning, they're greeted by Principal McKnight. He knows everyone by name. Principals are busy minute to minute, from managing the teaching staff, monitoring classrooms to handling administrative matters, and disciplinary issues. While I was only with Principal McKnight for one day, it helped me to see how I can better communicate with school administrators given how extremely busy they are; and how clearly important their interactions with students are with regards to maintaining safe environments that are conducive to learning."

The mission of the South Atlanta School of Law and Social Justice is to empower the next generation of leaders for positive change. It is one of four new small schools at the South Atlanta High Educational Complex. In serving approximately 260 students in grades 9 through 11, it provides a complete college preparatory curriculum and personalized experience to its students. As part of the curriculum, students take unique courses such as Forensic Science, Current Issues, Street Law, Sociology and Criminology. By leveraging business community partnerships, including Oglethorpe University, Georgia State University, Turner Broadcasting, Macy's and the Georgia Bar Association, and a dynamic faculty, the school works to ensure that all of its students are prepared for college, the workplace and success after high school.

"I decided to get involved in the 'Principal for a Day' program to expand our school's interaction with the local business community. Students today are living in a new era - one that requires them to start training to be a citizen of a global economy from their very first day of school. By inviting businesses, like Wren, to attend our school for 'Principal for a Day', we give them a chance to see firsthand how we run our classes, stress collaboration and have students experience real-life settings in the fostering atmosphere only a learning environment can provide," said McKnight. "We're always looking for ways to improve how we can better prepare students for the working world and appreciate input from the business community on how they can help us and become integrated into the educational process."

PFAD had a record turnout to celebrate its tenth year, with more than 160 community members participating. Wren volunteered with PFAD in 2008 at the Morning Side Elementary School. In addition to spending the day as honorary principals, many "Principals for a Day" also stay in touch with their schools. Wren plans to be a resource for the school to assist administrators with ongoing security planning.
