Google Responds To Murdoch’s Possible News Corp Ban

Posted on: Tuesday, 10 November 2009, 14:57 CST

In response to a threat made by News Corp Chief Rupert Murdoch, Google on Tuesday said that any news entity could request to have its content removed from the search engine.

Murdoch told Sky News Australia that he would be looking in to ways to remove stories from his news empire from Google News.

News Corp had made a previous announcement that it would begin to charge customers for access to its news content online.

"There's a doctrine called 'fair use', which we believe to be challenged in the courts and would bar it altogether," Murdoch told Sky.

"But we'll take that slowly."

“Google News and web search are a tremendous source of promotion for news organizations, sending them about 100,000 clicks every minute,” said one Google spokesman.

“Publishers put their content on the web because they want it to be found, so very few choose not to include their material in Google News and web search. But if they tell us not to include it, we don't.”

“If publishers want their content to be removed from Google News specifically all they need to do it tell us,” Google said in a statement.

“News organizations are in complete control over whether and how much of their content appears in search results."

“I think we will [remove our websites from Google’s search index] but that’s when we start charging,” said Murdoch.
