Apple Defeats Competitors In Q3 Handset Operating Profit

As research firm Strategy Analytics crowned Apple the winner in handset profits during the most recent quarter, Nokia and Samsung showed off new models in hopes of defeating the iPhone.
Strategy Analytics named Apple’s iPhone the top-selling handset in terms of operating profit in the September quarter.
Meanwhile, Nokia on Tuesday announced its new N900 and Samsung showed off its new open mobile platform, named bada, which will launch in December.
Nokia’s N900 is the first Nokia handset to run on the Linux Maemo operating system.
“The Maemo platform, which powers the N900, reflects Nokia's need to replace its legacy software platforms with something more powerful to compete with Apple and others," Ben Wood, head of research at British consultancy CCS Insight, told Reuters.
"Samsung's announcement of bada shows it has also identified the same requirement. The big question is, does the mobile phone world need yet another operating system?"
Nokia still stands as the market’s largest smartphone provider, but the company’s third-quarter profits did not measure up to that of Apple.
Although Apple does not disclose its profits per business line, Strategy Analytics estimated its iPhone operating profits to be around $1.6 billion in the third quarter.
Nokia’s third-quarter operating profits reached $1.1 billion.
Apple sold 7.4 million iPhones during the third quarter for a sales earnings of $4.5 billion, while Nokia sold 108.5 million phones with sales of $10.36 billion.
"With strong volumes, high wholesale prices and tight cost controls, the PC vendor has successfully broken into the mobile phone market in just two years," said Alex Spektor, an analyst at Strategy Analytics.
