GameStop To Sell Digital Video Game Updates

GameStop Corp will soon begin selling digital upgrades for video games over the counter.

The company said it is set to begin testing next year with online gaming systems from Microsoft and Sony.

The system will allow customers of GameStop stores to purchase a new digital update for a video game they already own, and the download will be available when they arrive at home.

"A large market for full game downloads is not imminent, (but) the add-on downloadable market will grow," GameStop Chief Operating Officer Paul Raines said at the BMO Capital Management Digital Entertainment conference.

The digital updates work on the concept that video game users are more likely to purchase a small update, including new levels and features, for a game they already own, rather than shelling out more money for a brand new game.

The concept may be heavily relied upon by the video game industry, which has seen slumping sales as of lately, including a 19 percent drop in sales last month, compared to October 2008.
