China’s defense ministry Web site has been the target of more than 2 million hack attacks since it was launched three months ago, an official told state media on Wednesday.
"From the first day the national defense ministry website went online, it received a large volume of uninterrupted attacks," Ji Guilin, the editor-in-chief of the website told the People's Daily in an interview.
"In the first month of operations there were more than 2.3 million hack attacks."
The defense ministry Web site was launched on August 20 in order to calm international fears about China’s military, according to AFP. It contains information such as official reports, photos, videos and facts about the military.
Most of the attempted attacks were fond to be ineffective, Ji said. He did not disclose information as to where the attacks originated.
Ji said the attacks were either intended to gather military information or to disrupt Web site operations.
"The traffic of the first day reached 70 million and the next day climbed to 130 million. The first month saw hackers attack 2.3 million times, especially the first week. Once there is an event, the attacks increased. But none of the attacks worked," China Daily quoted Ji.
Total traffic to the Web site in the first three months reached 1.25 billion, said Ji. Beijing, Guangdong and Jiangsu accounted for 40 percent of visitors to the site.
