2009 Named The Year Of Twitter

Even though the year isn't quite over, Microsoft reports that "Twitter" was one of the top searches on Bing.

"Michael Jackson," "Twitter and "Swine Flu" were the top three search topics, according to a Microsoft blog post on Sunday.

Also topping Bing's search list were "Stock Market," "Farrah Fawcett," "Patrick Swayze," and "Jaycee Dugard."

Billions of search queries were analyzed to come up with their list.

Meanwhile, Texas-based Global Language Monitor (GLM) reports that "Twitter" was their "Top Word of 2009."

"In a year dominated by world-shaking political events, a pandemic, the after effects of a financial tsunami and the death of a revered pop icon, the word Twitter stands above all the other words," GLM president Paul Payack told AFP.

"Obama," "Stimulus," "Vampire" and "Deficit" were also included on GLM's top words list.

GLM uses a "proprietary algorithm that tracks words and phrases in the media and on the Internet" to compile its rankings.

Words are tracked in relation to "frequency, contextual usage and appearance in global media outlets, factoring in long-term trends, short-term changes, momentum and velocity."
