Amazon’s Kindle Beats Monthly Record Sales

As the battle for the digital reader market heats up, Amazon reports that sales for its Kindle electronic book reader has bypassed its monthly record for December, and only half way through the month.

According to Reuters, the online retailer claims the Kindle was the most wanted product during the holiday shopping season.

In order to step up the competition with Sony Corp and Barnes & Noble, Amazon plans to sell its product with free expedited shipping, while Barnes and Noble's Nook electronic reader has yet to be introduced into customers' hands.

Following Amazon's exciting news on the Kindle's success, Sony Corp announced they struck a deal with News Corp to make The Wall Street Journal and other publications available on its electronic reader.

Shares of Seattle-based Amazon closed down 1 percent at $126.91 on Thursday on the Nasdaq.
