LG Display unveiled the world’s thinnest LCD panel recently, measuring in at only 2.6 millimeters (0.1 inches) thick.

The secret for such a thin LCD screen is hidden in the applied system of illumination.

Proper operation for LCD panels requires a light source that is typically placed behind the screen. LG has decided to place the LEDs along the edge of the screen. In this way the finished panels are much thinner, but taller and wider than standard.

LG Display will present a 2.6-graph panel at the upcoming International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas early next year.
