LSI Logic Storage Standard Products Integrated Into New HP Serial Attached SCSI Server Platforms

MILPITAS, Calif., July 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- LSI Logic Corporation strengthened its storage market leadership today by announcing that the company's Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) storage standard products ( http://www.lsilogic.com/sas ) will be integrated into eight HP ProLiant enterprise server platforms.
LSI Logic is recognized as being first-to-market with SAS product solutions. HP is the No. 1 server manufacturer in the world, as ranked by market analyst firm IDC.
"We believe our success in the storage business is a direct result of LSI Logic's ability to successfully partner with market leaders such as HP, and to deliver innovative products at the core of the storage business," said Bill Wuertz, vice president and general manager for the LSI Logic Storage Standard Products division. "Our storage OEM customers will be using LSI Logic technology solutions to gain a time-to-market advantage and interoperability confidence."
Over the next 12 months, these new technologies will be made available in HP BladeSystem, HP Integrity, HP ProLiant and HP StorageWorks products.
"New standards like SAS and partners such as LSI Logic enable HP to deliver next-generation infrastructure to help customers improve their productivity and lower their cost of ownership," said Paul Perez, vice president, Storage, Networking and Infrastructure, Industry Standard Servers, HP. "HP has once again extended the capabilities of industry-standard server storage with innovations that can be deployed in existing environments."
LSI Logic believes that its SAS design wins underscore the significance of the company's technology leadership, ability to deliver first-to-market solutions, proven interoperability and world class technical support. Further details regarding specific server platforms remain confidential at this time and will be announced in cooperation with OEMs in future months and as server platforms come to market. LSI Logic has SAS product design wins at four of the five top server manufacturers in the world, including HP. Other design win specifics will be announced as OEM platforms come to market.
"The significance of an OEM commitment to Serial Attached SCSI implementations cannot be overlooked," said Dave Reinsel, program director, storage research, IDC. "This first generation serial SCSI implementation will preserve legacy command set and SCSI cost-efficiencies and lay the foundation upon which SAS solutions will evolve."
IDC estimates the server market will grow from 5.3M units in 2003 to 7.9M units in 2006. One data point used to make market projections is shipment estimates for the major server market suppliers such as HP, Dell, IBM, Sun and FSC. Together, these five represented 77.2 % of the worldwide server shipments in 2003, according to IDC.
LSI Logic is shipping both 4-port and 8-port SAS controller ICs, (the LSISAS1064 and LSISAS1068), SAS expander ICs and SAS HBAs. All products use the Fusion-MPT(TM) (Message Passing Technology) architecture ( http://lsilogic.com/fusion ) to speed OEM development time and increase reliability. The company also supplies a full line of MegaRAID(R) SAS adapter cards and RAID on Motherboard (ROMB) solutions.
The highly scalable SAS architecture extends today's direct attach server storage markets and complements cost-sensitive Serial ATA (SATA) controller-based storage environments. SAS will enable unprecedented customer flexibility with its ability to support SAS and SATA in the same infrastructure. It will also significantly enhance scalability and performance, while reducing total cost of ownership.
