France Telecom looks at buying Spanish mobile operator Amena
PARIS, July 19 (Xinhua) -- France Telecom SA said on Tuesday it is looking at the possibility of buying the Spanish mobile operator Amena, with a reported value of 9 billion euros.
A spokeswoman for the company said: "France Telecom is studying the Amena issue," though the company was not taking part in an auction of the Spanish group.
She said that any deal reached should "not have any impact on the dividend payout policy" of the group.
Analysts worry that the debt of 43.9 billion euros owed by France Telecom at the end of 2004 could be raised due to the acquisition.
Amena is Auna's wireless division and is 97.9 percent controlled by the telecom holding Auna. It has some 22 percent market share in Spain.
The spokeswoman for France Telecom said that the possible bid for Amena was being assessed according to the impact on the group' s operating performance and dividend policy.
