Custer Makes His Last Stand on 'Into the West'; New Vixen Mixes Things Up on 'Stargate SG-1'

Jacob Wheeler's daughter is widowed and tries to make a home with three orphans at a refugee camp while her brother acts as a scout for Gen. Custer in this week's episode of "Into the West," airing at 7 p.m. Friday on TNT, cable channel 29. The Battle of the Little Big Horn figures greatly in this installment.
Ben Browder ("Farscape") is back as pilot Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell in the ninth season-opener of "Stargate SG-1," airing at 7 p.m. Friday on Sci-Fi Channel, cable digital channel 175. But everything else is in flux. There's a new general (Beau Bridges as Gen. Hank Landry) and both Lt. Col. Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) and Dr. Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) are moving into new positions. Complicating matters further will be sultry Vala Mal Doran (Claudia Black).
The Wraith are still on a murderous roll in the season-opener of "Stargate: Atlantis" season-opener, 8 p.m. Friday on Sci-Fi Channel. Col Caldwell (Mitch Pileggi ("X-Files") arrives to help but there are complications.
The season-opener of "Battlestar Galactica" (9 p.m. on Sci-Fi) finds the commander dying and his son in jail.
Yikes! Monk's agoraphobic brother, Ambrose (John Turturro) falls for his brother's assistant, Natalie, on a new episode of "Monk," airing at 9 p.m. Friday on USA, cable channel 34.
AMC, cable channel 48, pays homage to the Duke (that's John Wayne to you little dogies) on Saturday and Sunday. Included in the lineup are the broadcasts of two airplane disaster flicks "The High and the Mighty" (7 p.m. Sunday) and "Island in the Sky" (7 p.m. Saturday). Neither film has been seen in more than 30 years.
In the former, it's co-pilot Dan Roman (Wayne) to the rescue when an airliner has engine trouble during a trans-Pacific flight. Claire Trevor and Robert Stack co-star. In the latter, Wayne is Capt. Dooley, a pilot whose transport plane crashes in Antarctica and he has to keep his men alive until they can be rescued.
The sequel has just started showing on pay cable so now is a good time to revisit "The Princess Diaries," airing at 7 p.m. (and unfortunately stretched out to three hours) Saturday on ABC, channel 8. Anne Hathaway plays Mia, a gawky high schooler who learns she is not only the heir to the throne of a tiny principality known as Genovia but that Julie Andrews is her grandmother. It's cute and sweet and everything you would expect from a Disney film. Hector Elizondo co-stars.
Zach Braff ("Scrubs") believes in doing it all. He wrote, directed and starred in the indie film darling "Garden State," debuting at 9 p.m. Saturday on Cinemax, pay digital channel 320. Stifled from afar by his domineering father, L.A.-based TV actor Andrew Largeman (Braff) journeys back to his hometown and reaquaints himself with old friends, tries not to confront Dad (Ian Holm) and falls in love with life and Natalie Portman, in a role specially written for the actress.
Dennis Quaid plays a climatologist who tries to rescue his son when a monumental weather system freezes the northern half of the United States in "The Day After Tomorrow," airing at 7 p.m. Saturday on HBO, pay digital channel 300. Jake Gyllenhaal, Emmy Rossum and Sela Ward star in this disaster flick.
John Travolta became the comeback kid with his starring turn in Quentin Tarantino's clever and violent film "Pulp Fiction," airing at 7 p.m. Saturday on Bravo, cable channel 46. Also starring are Uma Thurman, Ving Rhames, Tim Roth, Harvey Keitel, Amanda Plummer, Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson.
George Clooney and friends (including John Turturro and Tulsan Tim Blake Nelson) have no clue as prisoners on the lam in "O, Brother, Where Art Thou" airing at 9 p.m. Saturday on TNT, cable channel 29. The film sound track is to die for.
"Saturday Night Live," presents the best of Christopher Walken at 10:30 p.m. on NBC, channel 2 and cable channel 9.
The Discovery Channel launches its annual "Shark Week" with last year's chilling documentary "Anatomy of a Shark Bite" at 7 p.m., followed by the "MythBusters" boys testing Hollywood shark myths at 8 p.m. Both Sunday on cable channel 30.
Once again, Homer gets religion on "The Simpsons," airing at 7 p.m. Sunday on Fox, channel 23 and cable channel 5.
Brad Garrett ("Everybody Loves Raymond") was nominated for an Emmy for his portrayal of comic actor Jackie Gleason in "Gleason,"being rebroadcast at 8 p.m. Sunday on CBS, channel 6.
Gabrielle has a major problem on "Desperate Housewives," in a rerun airing at 8 p.m. Sunday on ABC, channel 8. It seems her nosy mama-in-law is onto her little affair with the lawn boy.
"Friends' " Matthew Perry is host of "The 2005 ESPY Awards," airing at 8 p.m. Sunday on ESPN, cable channel 25. Awards will be presented to top athletes and Oprah Winfrey, and Destiny's Child performs.
Ruth tries to drown herself in work to forget her situation with George, Claire meets a new guy and David and Keith have completely different takes on their foster parenting plan in a new episode of "Six Feet Under," airing at 8 p.m. Sunday on HBO, pay digital channel 300.
Meredith bends the rules to care for her mother's former scrub nurse on a rebroadcast of "Grey's Anatomy," 9 p.m. Sunday on ABC, channel 8. Anna Maria Horsford plays the patient.
The day has finally arrived. Vince's art film is getting a screening at the Sundance Film Festival on "Entourage," 9 p.m. Sunday on HBO, pay digital channel 300.
