Pueblo, Colo., Players Not As Fanatical About Sports Video Games

Jul. 20--At Krieger's Sports Bar and Grill in Pueblo, the patrons like to take their shots on the sports video games.
Just not so much on the Golden Tee golf challenge. "Big Buck" Hunter remains the bigger draw, according to restaurant general manager Jody Shaffer.
"There are people who come in and play it religiously but it's not as near as popular as it is in the East," Shaffer said of Golden Tee, now the nation's top pay-for-play video game.
"We've got a hunting game here that has a bigger pull."
Geography apparently plays some role in a video game's popularity.
Shaffer, who this past year relocated from St. Louis to Pueblo, said in St. Louis, typical of Eastern cities, the lines to play Golden Tee form at 4 p.m. and do not stop until closing time.
"In other places every bar or restaurant has one. Not everyone has one here," he said.
Also, regional awareness of a game -- or lack of awareness -- could also factor into whether a game is popular at the local level, he said. In the East the game's popularity tends to feed on itself, he said.
Competition also matters. Shaffer said he thinks Golden Tee numbers may level off because rival EA Sports released an "almost identical" game, diluting the video golf market.
