Oil Deliveries to China a Priority for Russia – Minister

MOSCOW. July 20 (Interfax) – Oil transport to China is a priority for Russia, Transport Minister Igor Levitin said ahead of his working visit to Beijing.

Speaking to Chinese reporters at the Interfax main office, Levitin said that last year about 6 million tonnes of oil were delivered, and in the first half of 2005, 3.7 million tonnes were shipped.

“The government wants us to boost oil transportation to China to 15 million tonnes. Russian Railways can cope with the task, but it requires ample preparatory work both along the route and at the border crossing,” he said.

“Railways are ready to increase the flow every year, but contracts are essential for them. When we see who is going to deliver oil and on what scale we will send additional tank cars and carry the cargo,” he said.

“Presently, Rosneft is our main supplier, but it has not confirmed the 15 million tonnes we need,” Levitin added.

Asked about charges for oil transit, he said it will depend on the contract prices of the suppliers.

As for construction of an oil pipeline to the Far East, Levitin said that in the first stage, it will be extended to Skovorodino, from where oil will be transported by rail.
