Facebook marked its sixth anniversary on the Internet yesterday, and to celebrate the occasion they simplified their home page and held an all-night “hackathon” to create new software for the social networking site.

Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, told AFP that the community is reaching another milestone this week with a 400 million membership base.

“To celebrate six years of Facebook and the 400 million people on the service, we’re doing what we like doing most — building and launching products for people,” he said in a blog post on Thursday.

“It’s rewarding to see that as Facebook has grown, people around the world are using the service to share information about events big and small and to stay connected to everyone they care about,” he added

Changes to the website’s home page, which started hitting computers late Thursday, include a modified Top Menu to make it easier to find messages, notifications, and requests. An Applications Dashboard will let members see the latest programs they or their friends have used, and a Games Dashboard is dedicated for all the gaming apps.

Looking back, Zuckerberg reflected on the last six years since he and his Harvard University classmates created the social networking giant: “Whether in times of tragedy or joy, people want to share and help one another. This human need is what inspires us to continue to innovate and build things that allow people to connect easily and share their lives with one another.”
