MEN Micro’s Intel Atom XL-based ESMexpress COM Module Features Extended Temperature Operation; More Memory

March 9, 2010

AMBLER, Pa., March 9 /PRNewswire/ — MEN Micro Inc., a world-renowned provider of embedded computing and I/O solutions for mission-critical industrial, mobile and harsh environment applications, now offers an upgraded ESMexpress Computer-on-Module (COM) that incorporates the Intel Atom XL processor to provide tested, qualified operation in the extended temperature range of -40 degrees C to +85 degrees C (-40 degrees F to +185 degrees F) in both conduction and convection cooled environments. It also features an increased memory capacity of 2 GBs, double its predecessor.

Because the enhanced XM1L conforms to the ANSI-VITA 59 RSE standard currently in development, it provides a cost-effective and easily upgradeable means of employing advanced embedded technology in highly rugged applications as found in industrial, harsh, mobile and mission-critical environments.

The low-power XM1L uses the Intel Atom XL processor family operating at up to 1.6 GHz in combination with an IA-32 core based on 45 nm process technology, while drawing a maximum of only 7 W.

In addition to the upgraded 2 GB of soldered DDR2 SDRAM system memory, the XM1L supports other memory, including USB Flash on the carrier board and 512 KB of L2 cache integrated into the processor.

Using only modern serial standards, all interfaces from the Intel System Controller Hub US15W are routed from the XM1L for use on any ESMexpress carrier board. Interfaces can include a combination of PCI Express links, LVDS, SDVO, high-definition audio, SATA, Ethernet with Wake-on-LAN functionality and USB, depending on application requirements. Additional COM interfaces are available on the carrier board via a USB to COM conversion.

A board management controller monitors all board functions to complete the functionality of the XM1L. For testing of the XM1L and for developing the application, the universal carrier board XC1 in ATX format can be used. The XM1L can also be plugged onto COM Express carrier boards (basic form factor type 2) via the adapter board AE12.

Like all ESMexpress modules, the new XM1L is installed in a closed housing that also guarantees 100% EMC protection and is 95 mm by 125 mm. It resists shock up to

15 g/11 ms, bump up to 10 g/16 ms and vibration up to 1 g/10 Hz to 150 Hz (sinusoidal).

Pricing for the XM1L starts at $497. Delivery is six weeks ARO.

About ESMexpress

ESMexpress modules are complete computers on a plug-on module. By configuring the I/O on an individual carrier board, the functionality can be tailored to the application, saving costs and time-to-market. The ESMexpress standard has been developed for applications requiring highly robust electronics to ensure safe and reliable operation even in harsh environmental conditions. This applies in particular to the fields of railway and avionics, partially to industrial automation and medical engineering as well as mobile applications in general. ESMexpress is currently in the process of ANSI-VITA standardization. The official designation will be ANSI-VITA 59, RSE Rugged System-On-Module Express.
