Borland's Software Change and Configuration Management Solution Reduces Risk and Expands Benefits of Globally-Distributed Software Development
Borland Software Corporation (Nasdaq:BORL), the global leader for Software Delivery Optimization(TM), today introduced an updated version of its StarTeam(R) 2005 software change and configuration management solution. StarTeam 2005 Release 2 provides enterprise organizations with new feature enhancements designed to help customers better manage changes as they occur in the software delivery lifecycle, as well as overcome the challenges associated with globally-distributed software development.
This latest release of StarTeam 2005 provides a complete command and control infrastructure for managing all project assets, from development through delivery, with improved integration with both the Eclipse(TM) development framework and Microsoft(R) Visual Studio(R).
"Enterprise organizations trying to manage development processes that extend across multiple locations, continents, and organizations, are being forced to do so within the ongoing, relentless churn of business and technology change," said Jim Duggan, research vice president at Gartner. "In this environment, it's imperative that critical software assets and information about those assets be accessible, available and searchable to the whole team, wherever they may be and whenever they need the access."
"Borland's Application Lifecycle Management solutions are designed to help customers manage the many types of change that put pressure on the software delivery process," said Boz Elloy, senior vice president of products, Borland. "StarTeam seeks to provide a centralized and stable foundation that can store, track and manage project assets to help teams more easily plan for and adapt to change requests, regardless of where development teams are located. This latest release is yet another step in Borland's quest to provide customers with software management solutions with the lowest total cost of ownership for high-performance distributed development."
Superior manageability and process control for distributed teams
StarTeam 2005 is designed to help software teams manage project progress, help audit processes and evaluate the impact of proposed changes across distributed teams. It also helps customers maximize data storage, reduce server load, help eliminate downtime and improve overall network stability. In addition to an updated "look-and-feel" via a redesigned user interface, as well as improved license management capabilities, StarTeam 2005 Release 2 includes the following new features:
-- Seamless Visual Studio Integration -- Significantly enhanced integration with the Microsoft Visual Studio .NET development environment enables users to access StarTeam's full functionality -- including access and control over versioned files and workflow process items such as change requests, collaboration threads, tasks, and requirements -- directly from within the Visual Studio environment.
-- Enhanced Customization in Eclipse -- Improved StarTeam integration with Eclipse now enables users to make use of customized workflow, forms and fields within an Eclipse client environment, offering full process flexibility for Eclipse users.
-- Improved Cache Agent -- StarTeam Cache Agent provides fast, reliable access to files without the cost and overhead of an additional repository, supporting distributed development with multi-site repositories. It now allows for project-level selection for Cache Agent synchronization, allowing a remote Cache Agent to be configured to cache content corresponding to specific projects, providing a greater degree of control over which file content is synchronized and made accessible at remote or outsourced locations.
This release also includes unique StarTeam 2005 capabilities designed with distributed development teams in mind:
-- Built-in Change Management -- Provides built-in change management and traceability for managing source code, defect tracking, and enhancement request tracking -- all within a single solution -- enabling pre-emptive and workflow-driven decision making.
-- Borland Search Server and Datamart -- Using these unique features, team members can access, retrieve and analyze information across multiple, distributed repositories for optimal reuse, sharing and analysis -- helping software teams increase productivity and make better business decisions.
-- Project Collaboration -- Team members can store project discussions within a shared environment such that project decisions are archived and new members can access previous discussions and get up to speed quickly.
A Complete ALM Solution for Software Delivery
Borland has built the underlying technology of StarTeam 2005 into the foundation of its Core Software Delivery Platform (SDP) -- an integrated, role-based platform designed to increase visibility and control over all phases of the software delivery process. With a centralized repository that promotes information flow and cross-role collaboration on shared activities throughout the development lifecycle, the foundation services of Core SDP(TM) provide secure access to software assets and deliverables across distributed team environments. This enables inputs across the globe to be effectively consolidated and coordinated to meet business expectations, quality benchmarks, compliance mandates and process maturity levels (like Six Sigma,(TM) ISO 9000, and CMMI(R)). Borland will continue to evolve the software change and management capabilities of Core SDP with new StarTeam advancements.
In addition, StarTeam 2005 Release 2 is vendor and platform agnostic, integrating with many of today's leading development environments such as Borland(R) JBuilder(R), Eclipse and Microsoft Visual Studio. It can help optimize individual productivity and improve team efficiency by integrating with leading ALM and business reporting tools including Borland CaliberRM(TM) for requirements engineering, Borland Together(R) for modeling, Borland Optimizeit(TM) for performance analysis, Business Objects, Crystal Reports, Mercury TestDirector(R) and Microsoft Office. In addition, StarTeam TestDirector Synchronizer allows defects logged within Mercury TestDirector to be synchronized into StarTeam change requests.
