EU Wants to Levy Pollution Tax on Airlines

July 25, 2005

The European Commission wants to tax airlines for the pollution they cause, a move that could add about $10 per ticket.

The commission proposes including airlines in the European Union’s emissions trading scheme, which caps the amount of carbon dioxide an industry is allowed to produce, the Financial Times reported Monday.

The move, which would put air carriers in the same category as with oil refineries and power generators, would include any carrier that departs from any EU airport.

The initiative has the support of some airlines, including British Airways.
