Next-Generation Bullet Train Makes 1st Test Run From Tokyo to Osaka

Posted on: Monday, 25 July 2005, 12:00 CDT

Jul. 24--TOKYO -- A next-generation shinkansen bullet train performed its first test run from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka on Sunday, traveling around 515 kilometers.

The "N-700," with a target of beginning commercial operations in spring 2007, entered the track at JR Tokyo Station shortly before 10 a.m. Sunday, causing excitement among people on the platform, with many taking photos of the train.

The cars at both ends of the train are shaped like an eagle spreading its wings. Due to its design and technology, the train is able to take curves without slowing and still keep passengers comfortable by tilting itself.

The new train will shorten by about five minutes the time it takes to travel between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka, which is currently around two and a half hours.

Kazuto Tsujimura, an official in charge of bullet train operations at Central Japan Railway Co. said, "Test runs have been going well so far. We will check (the tilting function) and try running at 270 km per hour on a curve."
