IBM Selects Virtutech Simics for Development of POWER6 Platform

Posted on: Monday, 25 July 2005, 15:00 CDT

Virtutech, Inc., the leading provider of full-system simulation technology for the development and testing of advanced electronic systems software, today announced a multi-year partnership with IBM. This initial engagement will allow IBM's Systems Group to leverage Virtutech's Simics full-system simulation technology for hypervisor and firmware development on the POWER6 platform. Simics will ensure superior code in IBM's line of enterprise servers, while maximizing engineering productivity and alleviating time-to-market constraints.

Delivering on its commitment to offer exclusive growth options to expanding businesses, IBM is investing in the development of future systems based on IBM POWER6, the next generation of IBM microprocessor technology. This investment includes the development and testing of software in the company's robust microprocessors. With Simics, the IBM eServer division can model the microprocessor's firmware and hypervisor virtually -- with no added hardware expense -- to turn out software faster and with higher quality while maximizing engineer productivity.

"IBM has historically made investments that deliver considerable, measurable improvements in engineering productivity, time to market and product quality," said Erich Baier, vice president, hardware program management at IBM. "Virtutech is meeting those challenges."

"Simulation is the key to advanced microprocessor development, and Simics is by far the most advanced realization of this technology available," said Kevin Collins, director, Global Firmware Development at IBM. "Our vision is to eventually simulate the entire code stack from firmware up, and Virtutech's Simics will be the cornerstone of this development."

"Virtutech's reputation is built on our customers' success, consistently strengthened by the compelling benefits achieved through leveraging Simics," said John Lambert, president and CEO of Virtutech. "IBM's decision to work with Virtutech is a clear validation of the value of full-system simulation, our unique approach to the market and IBM's commitment to ensuring quality products for its customers."

Virtutech's full-system simulation platform, Simics, enables software developers to model hardware so accurately that the software cannot detect the difference between running on real production hardware and running on Simics. All code -- from firmware up to applications -- can run unchanged on Simics with extremely high performance.
