AboveNet's Aggressive Expansion of its Footprint and Product Line Result In Dramatic Increase in Customer Access

Posted on: Tuesday, 11 November 2003, 06:00 CST

NEW YORK, Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- AboveNet, Inc., the leading provider of optical infrastructure enabling unconstrained information exchange services, reports that it has seen a dramatic increase in customer access as a result of its yearlong initiative to expand both its footprint and product line. Customers in many third-party data centers and point-of-presence (POP) facilities now have access to AboveNet services. In addition, the Company began in January to launch a new generation of bundled products that provide customers with an initial entry point into the Company's wide breadth of infrastructure services.

In January, AboveNet began to aggressively expand its footprint by increasing its presence in third-party POP and data center facilities. By leveraging strategic partnerships with facility-based providers, AboveNet has increased its presence by more than 30%. This increase better allows the Company to reach customers previously beyond its network topography and to offer its services at more locations and enable more customer access to the AboveNet network.

AboveNet has signed agreements with four facility providers and will offer customers in those facilities access to the AboveNet network and services. Customers can purchase bundled products including Metro Gig-E, remote storage and data backup and restore. A presence in these facilities also will enhance AboveNet's already broad peering capabilities, which will further increase performance on its IP network.

In addition, AboveNet has rolled out the first in an ongoing series of products that are designed to provide point-of-entry bundled services. These services leverage the breadth of AboveNet's assets while granting customers more contractual flexibility. One product, Metro Gig-E, enables customers to experience the benefits of a private fiber optic network on a flat rate with bursting capacity up to a gigabit. The success of these products and expansion of the footprint is underscored by the increase of 82% in billable traffic since the beginning of 2003.

"There is tremendous opportunity to grow our fiber, transit and managed services business that we are able to tap into through this expansion of our reach beyond our facilities," said John Gerdelman, president and chief executive officer of AboveNet. "By partnering with companies to gain access to their POP's and data centers, we have grown our opportunity base without expending valuable capital. We are excited to be able to reach more customers and give them an opportunity to experience the once out-of-reach benefits of a fiber network."

AboveNet has the most extensive metropolitan networks in the industry, along with an optical IP network in both the US and Europe.
