Australia to strengthen transport security: minister

CANBERRA, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Australian Transport Minister Warren Truss on Monday said the government is constantly monitoring and reviewing transport practices and plans to further strengthen transport security.

The minister was speaking at a two-day transport infrastructure conference that started Monday in Sydney, the capital city of the state of New South Wales, at which security is on top of the agenda.

He said the London bombings have prompted a review of Australia ' s transport system.

"The way in which the London Underground bombings were planned and executed will most likely require us as a nation to further review and examine how well we need to deal with our public land transport system," he was quoted by Australian Associated Press as saying.

"In the wake of the tragic London transport bombings we are seeking to further strengthen our transport security and have recommenced a national security public information campaign reminding all Australians to remain vigilant," he said.

"While there's been no terrorist attack on Australian soil, recent events highlight that there is no room for complacency," he said.

"Our terrorism prevention measures ensure that there is the minimum disruption possible to the transport industry as it continues its vital task for the Australian economy," he said.

He said the government had also increased funding for checks on shipping containers coming into Australia.

He said the Australian government is also assisting a number of reviews of Australia's aviation security by John Wheeler, the former head of Britain's National Criminal Intelligence Service, who is in Australia to investigate existing security measures at airports and recommend improvements.
