Most New Yorkers support bag search: police
NEW YORK, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Critics of random bag search in New York mass transit system said Tuesday they are considering legal option against the move, while police department officials insist that public response to the anti-terror measure has been mostly positive.
According to officials with the city's police department, the precaution has an additional crime-fighting effect in the subway system, as the latest statistics indicated that subway crime is down 23 percent so far this month, compared to the same time last year.
On Monday the bag search policy was expanded to include riders at other mass transit systems, including the Port Authority Bus Terminal, the AirTrain, PATH, and New Jersey Transit trains.
But the New York Civil Liberties Union is compiling information on the searches and is considering a lawsuit in response to the policy, which it considers an invasion of privacy.
Meanwhile, a group of New Yorkers who oppose the policy have launched a website called NoSubwaySearches.org.
The site offers tips on understanding your rights and gives straphangers tools to challenge the policy.
While New Yorkers still on edge after the terrorist attacks in London, the police department an dispatched explosives expert to Britain to study the suicide bombings.
The police department also has contacted chemical suppliers and other potential commercial sources for suspected bomb components in the New York city area and asked them to contact investigators if they notice anything suspicious, officials said Monday.
Investigators in London have reportedly speculated that bombers in the July 7 attacks used TATP, a highly unstable explosive made from commercially available chemicals such as acid, acetone and peroxide.
