Dell'Oro Group Forecasts Strong Growth for Service Provider Routers; Broadband User Traffic Drives Service Provider Investments in Router Networks

Posted on: Thursday, 28 July 2005, 12:00 CDT

According to a recent report by Dell'Oro Group, the trusted source for information about the networking and telecommunications industries, the worldwide market for service provider routers will grow at double-digit rates over the next five years and will approach $5 billion by 2009.

One of the primary drivers of the service provider purchases in routers is the rapid growth of broadband Internet users. By 2009, Dell'Oro Group predicts the number of broadband subscribers will more than double to almost 350 million.

"Each time a person signs up for broadband service, the traffic load on the network increases. Multiply that by a few hundred million, and you need a lot of new routers in the networks," said Shin Umeda, Principal Analyst of Routers Research at Dell'Oro Group. "This traffic growth will give router vendors a huge opportunity to increase their sales" added Umeda.
