Air Show Pilot Dies of Injuries Suffered in Crash

Posted on: Thursday, 28 July 2005, 12:00 CDT

The Romanian- built Yak-52 stalled during an inverted roll, troopers said.

CLAREMORE -- The pilot of a single-engine aircraft that crashed during a performance at an air show died Sunday from his injuries.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said Rodger Modglin, 55, of Owasso, was transported to St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa with head injuries following the 1:30 p.m. crash Saturday. The patrol said Modglin died at the hospital early Sunday.

Modglin's Yak-52 aircraft crashed during the Wings Over Oklahoma Air Show at the Claremore airport, located seven miles east of Claremore in Rogers County.

The air show continued Sunday morning after shutting down Saturday following the accident.

The crash occurred when the aircraft stalled while performing an inverted roll, state troopers reported.

The aircraft crashed on its top, OHP reports show.

There were no reports of any injuries on the ground.

The Yak-52 is a Romanian-built, propeller-driven all-metal aircraft first produced in the 1970s as a primary trainer for students who would later fly Soviet jet aircraft.

The aerobatics-capable Yak-52 is often flown by sports enthusiasts.

The aircraft that crashed Saturday was a 1989 model and was registered to Modglin in 1999, FAA registration records show.

The probable cause of Saturday's crash will likely not be determined for at least a week or two, FAA officials said.

The investigation then will continue for an undetermined amount of time.

FAA inspectors will examine the mechanical functioning of the aircraft and will try to determine whether the crash was due to aircraft malfunction or pilot error, said FAA spokesman Roland Herwig.

"Both mechanical and human factors will have to be examined," he said.

Herwig said that although FAA personnel will examine the aircraft, the National Transportation Safety Board is in charge of the investigation.

NTSB officials could not be reached for comment Sunday.

Funeral services for Modglin are pending.
