WhereNet Forms Security Group Within Its Rapidly Growing Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics Business to Address National Maritime and Port Security Needs

Posted on: Thursday, 28 July 2005, 12:00 CDT

SANTA CLARA, Calif., July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- WhereNet Corp., the leader of wireless solutions for tracking and managing enterprise assets, announced today that the company is extending its support of a comprehensive national security maritime strategy through the formation of a security group within its rapidly growing transportation, distribution, and logistics division. Developed in response to growing customer demand fueled by President Bush's Homeland Security Presidential Directive-13 (HSPD-13), enacted December 21, 2004, the newly formed security group will work with government officials, national security experts, and strategic partners to develop solutions that address critical national needs while ensuring the continued free flow of trade and efficient port operations.

"The best way to defend our homeland from ocean-bound suspicious cargo is to make sure that this cargo never has a chance to hit our shores," said Rob Quartel, CEO of FreightDesk Technologies, former Federal Maritime Commissioner, and current member of the Task Force on the Implementation of a Comprehensive National Strategy for Maritime Security. "Tracking and monitoring devices can be a key part of the layered approach needed to secure maritime and other cargoes, in combination with supply chain intelligence and targeted inspections."

As the only company to have successfully installed active RFID, real-time locating system technology at several marine terminals, WhereNet will further leverage this technology by developing additional applications to meet security requirements for marine assets and cargo. Positioned to serve business and government organizations, these systems will greatly enhance transportation security by providing real-time monitoring and reporting capabilities for vessels while at sea and at port. Matthew Schor, a veteran of multiple container security and Operation Safe Commerce initiatives, will lead WhereNet's security group.

WhereNet is not a newcomer to the transportation security arena, having successfully executed pilot projects for the U.S. Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration (MARAD) and Operation Safe Commerce. WhereNet provides a proven technology for constant, global, inter-modal tracking of containers from load to unload, with intrusion and radiation monitoring.

"Providing maritime security solutions to our large existing customer base is a natural extension of our business focus and strategy," said Mark Irvine, senior vice president and general manager of the transportation, distribution, and logistics division for WhereNet Corp. "Tracking and providing real-time status information about containers in the multi-path, metal-intensive cargo bay of ships at sea is no trivial task, yet we have successfully demonstrated this capability through numerous government pilot projects. Our demonstrated ability to monitor containers on terminal, in transit, or aboard ships and to relay critical information, such as radiation sensor status, adds an important layer to homeland security."
