Verizon Wireless customers who don’t want to commit to long-term service contracts will now be able to prepay for smartphone service, the company announced on Thursday.

In a September 1 press release, the company announced that the new 3G Prepaid data package would allow customers to access unlimited data on select smartphones and multimedia handsets for a rate of $30 per month. A $10 monthly package that allows 25 MB worth of data downloads each month and includes a $0.20 per MB overage fee is also available.

"These new data offerings will help our prepaid customers experience the full breadth of Verizon Wireless’ robust device portfolio and the many engaging, informative and helpful applications that depend on a data plan," Jim Sullivan, the company’s Director of Marketing, said in the press release. "Our prepaid customers will now have the freedom to enjoy all of the capabilities that these phones have to offer, while controlling costs and without being tied to a contract."

The prepaid packages are available immediately in all Verizon Wireless Communications Stores, and can be purchased online starting on September 28.

According to Reuters, Verizon "did not offer a price list for the prepaid phones but said pricing would be close to the amount it charges customers signing up for a one-year postpaid contract." However, according to Peter Svensson of the Associated Press (AP), "The phones will be more expensive than those offered to customers on regular ‘postpaid’ plans."

Among the smartphones and multimedia phones eligible for the plans are select models of the BlackBerry Curve, the BlackBerry Storm and Storm2, the BlackBerry Tour, the BlackBerry Bold, the Palm Pre Plus, the Palm Pixi Plus, the Motorola Droid, Droid X, and Droid 2; the HTC Droid Eris and Droid Incredible, the LG Ally, the LG enV 3 and enV Touch, the LG Chocolate Touch, the Samsung Alias 2 and Samsung Renown, the Nokia Twist, and the Casio Exilim.
