According to Twitter co-founder Evan Williams, the micro-blogging service has over 145 million registered users and more people are using mobile devices to access the site.

Williams wrote on the Twitter blog Thursday that nearly 300,000 third-party applications have been developed around the service, which allows users to pepper one another with messages of 140 characters or less.

"These new services help people get the most out of Twitter, contributing to user growth and new business opportunities — both of which are critical to the long-term viability of the ecosystem," Williams said.

He said the number of people using the service on mobile devices jumped 62 percent since mid-April and 16 percent of new users start on mobile.

The Twitter chief executive also said that 46 percent of active Twitter users regularly use a mobile device, such as an Apple iPhone.

In April, Twitter acquired a third-party mobile application called Tweetie and turned it into the site’s official program for the iPhone.

Twitter applications also exist on Research in Motion’s BlackBerry devices, as well as Google’s Android mobile operating system.

Williams published the figures for the top 10 applications people use to access Twitter for the past 30 days.

He said that 78 percent used Twitter’s official website, 14 percent used Twitter’s mobile website, eight percent used text messaging, eight percent used Tweetie for the iPhone and seven percent used Twitter for BlackBerry.

Other applications people use to access the micro-blogging service are TwitPic, a program for uploading photos, TweetDeck, Echofon, Google Friend Connect and UberTwitter.

According to Twitter, some people access the site by using multiple applications.
