New York governor sends more national guards to guard mass transit

NEW YORK, July 29 (Xinhua) -- New York state governor George Pataki called hundreds of more National Guard troops to active duty on Friday to protect New York City's mass transit system in the wake of the London subway bombings.

"New Yorkers have been reassured by the presence of the National Guard at our transportation facilities," he said. "In the wake of the recent attacks in London and the ongoing terrorist threat, these additional steps to improve security will further build confidence in our great city," he added.

Hundreds of additional troops will join the National Guard already on duty, allowing more patrolling at train stations, subways, rail yards and other mass transit sites. The troops will also guard ferries and rail yards, the governor said.

Pataki said the public can expect an increased security presence, but that information on the exact number of troops and the locations where they are being deployed is not released for security reasons.

The National Guard has been used extensively on full-time state active duty to patrol potential terrorist sites since Sept. 11 terror attacks in 2001 and on full-time national active duty for combat and combat support abroad.

More than 3,500 National Guard troops from New York are now involved in state and federal active duty.
