Target To Sell iPads On October 3rd

American retailing company Target Corp. announced Friday that it will sell Apple's iPad tablet computer at its 1,743 stores across the United States starting October 3rd.

Until now, Apple sold its tablet computer directly from its Website and online stores, and through electronics retailers such as Best Buy. The device was also sold at several smaller retailers through Amazon.com's online store. Like the iPod and iPhone, however, the iPad will now be available in general retail stores.

"At this point, there's zero downside to going to Target," Peter Fader, of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton Business School, who follows the electronics industry, told MacWorld reporter Joel Mathis.

"You start out with the high-end early adopters and then you go mainstream. With so many competing devices about to come out, it's important to Apple to continue to dominate the story. You know those devices will be at Target," he noted.

Also, beginning October 17, consumers who have Target store credit cards will be eligible for a 5 percent discount on an iPad purchase. The company will sell the 16GB, 32GB and the 64GB models of both Wi-Fi and 3G versions of the iPad.
