Mumbai hit again by rain, airport flights canceled
NEW DELHI, July 31 (Xinhua) -- India's southwestern city of Mumbai were hid hard again on Sunday by torrential rains which forced the train services and air traffic in the city to close once more.
Just when Mumbai's population was beginning to recover from the paralyzing flooding that claimed 250 lives across the city, fresh rains flooded residential areas for a second time in less than five days.
Many low-lying areas came under a sheet of water after heavy rains since Saturday night, according to Indo-Asian News Service report.
The water level rose menacingly in other parts of the city too, reviving bitter memories when millions were trapped in their offices and homes and simply in the open Tuesday and Wednesday.
On Sunday, thousands were again stranded in airports and trains after authorities canceled flights and slowed down train movement.
Later in the day, both the domestic and international airports were partially operational, the report said.
A major disaster was averted Saturday when an Air-India Boeing aircraft with 333 passengers on board skidded off the runway at the international airport amid heavy rains.
The rains, which had earlier turned Mumbai into a virtual sea, had forced the domestic and international airports to shut down operations Tuesday noon. Normal services resumed Thursday.
With the metrological department predicting more rains over the next 48 hours, the authorities have urged people to stay indoors. The police have also issued a traffic alert.
