Microsoft Launches Web Based Office Applications

Microsoft Corp. launched a cloud version of its popular Office suit of applications on Tuesday as it looks to extend its customer base and beat out Google.

The new service will available as a limited test on Tuesday starting at 12PM PDT, and will be on sale on a subscription basis around the globe next year.  The new service is called Office 365.

The new cloud-based services will be accessed through most browsers and on mobile devices.

Customers are able to access Office programs like Outlook e-mail and SharePoint websites from anywhere, without installing software on their computers.

The move is seen as a competitive strike against Google, which has already seen some success with its cloud-based services known as Google Apps.

Google Apps is seen as a low-cost Web-based alternative to Microsoft's traditional Office software.
