Ask Jeeves Will Sell Ads Next to Its Search Results

Posted on: Monday, 1 August 2005, 21:00 CDT

Aug. 1--Stepping up its competition with the other search engines, Ask Jeeves is launching an advertising network that will allow marketers to buy ads next to the company's search results.

The program, which makes its debut Aug. 15, is similar to the highly lucrative ad networks operated by Google and Yahoo where advertisers bid to have their ads appear alongside certain search queries.

Ask Jeeves is the Oakland-based subsidiary of InterActiveCorp, and the ads will also appear on other Web sites owned by the parent company.

"We're introducing an auction-driven marketplace where an advertiser can come in with a credit card and have an ad go live in one to two hours," said James Speer, vice president of marketing and products for IAC Advertising Solutions, the entity created to run the program.

Search engine advertising has exploded in popularity in recent years, providing billions of dollars in annual revenue for Internet search companies such as Google and Yahoo.

Although Ask Jeeves has had its own ad program, the company gets most of its revenue from running Google ads alongside its search results, and splitting the income with the Mountain View search giant.

Ask Jeeves will continue to run the Google ads for now, along with its own new ones, under a contract that runs through 2007. However, most observers expect the company to eventually completely replace the Google ads with its own.
