NMS Communications Extends Flexibility of Its AccessGate(TM) RAN Optimization System With New Hardware and Configuration Options, Management Platform, and Industry-Wide Interoperability

Posted on: Tuesday, 2 August 2005, 09:00 CDT

Operators Benefit from Reduced OpEx, Improved Capacity to Meet Increasing Subscriber Demands for New Mobile Services

NMS Communications (NASDAQ: NMSS), a leading provider of technologies and solutions for mobile applications and infrastructure, today announced the availability of a family of three new AccessGate(TM) radio access network optimization systems (www.nmscommunications.com/AccessGate). The AccessGate 1000 series has been specifically designed to optimize the transport of GSM voice and data traffic over wireless networks, enabling mobile operators to roll out new services to their subscribers more rapidly and more cost-effectively. The AccessGate solution has already proven its efficacy in the networks of several global mobile operators, and these new offerings deliver the same substantial 50 percent or greater backhaul bandwidth savings as their predecessor.

All of the AccessGate systems are complemented by a new element management system, AccessEMS, which enables performance and security management, historical trend analysis and capacity planning, configuration management, and real-time monitoring of all AccessGate systems deployed in a mobile network. In addition, AccessGate has been thoroughly field tested for interoperability with all major base station subsystem equipment providers, ensuring that it will flexibly meet the specific needs of any operator's access infrastructure environment.

Operators who deploy these new versions of AccessGate can expect the same levels of performance and quality that the earlier version is delivering in operator networks around the world. For example, AccessGate's optimization techniques introduce less than 10 milliseconds of fixed end-to-end processing delay, so there is no perceptible degradation of voice quality. Other vendors' solutions contribute at least 20 milliseconds of variable delay, which can be noticeable to the mobile end user. And all AccessGate systems are designed with mission-critical reliability, with graceful, passive failover in the unlikely event of an outage. This means there's no loss of traffic or discontinuity of service if a system should ever fail.

The three members of the new AccessGate 1000 series - the AG1008, AG1016, and AG1016X - provide a range of modularity and interface density to ensure delivery of cost-effective solutions that meet the most common needs of cell sites, regional hub locations, and central offices. This improved modularity lowers the cost of the overall solution for improved ROI and a highly attractive payback period.

"With transmission costs representing 10 percent of a typical wireless service provider's operational expenditures, backhaul optimization solutions like AccessGate are particularly valuable," said Philip Marshall, Director of Wireless Technologies at the Yankee Group. "A key attribute is for these solutions to integrate efficiently and operate reliably with existing network infrastructure."

The new AccessGate 1000 series, with its addition of new hardware and configuration options, as well as industry-wide base station interoperability, clearly demonstrates NMS' understanding of the importance of seamless integration and highly reliable performance in operators' existing infrastructure - even as those networks are evolving.

"Astelit has been impressed by the ease of use and dramatic bandwidth reductions resulting from NMS' AccessGate technology," said Resat Tanis, Transmission Network Planning Manager for Astelit, a subsidiary of Turkcell with mobile operations in Ukraine. "AccessGate is the ideal solution to help Astelit manage the rapidly growing demands placed on our backhaul bandwidth. The new virtual gateway feature plus the improved modularity and scalability of the AccessGate 1000 will allow us to further lower our operating expenses so we can focus on developing and delivering new services to our customers."
