BakBone Software Announces Support of SGI Altix Servers Running 64-Bit Linux

Posted on: Thursday, 18 December 2003, 06:00 CST

SAN DIEGO, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- BakBone Software(TM) , a global provider of data backup and recovery software, today announced BakBone's NetVault(TM) software support for SGI Altix(TM) servers running 64-bit Linux on Intel Itanium 2 processors. BakBone's support for the SGI Altix system provides superior data protection on Linux within mission-critical and high-performance computing (HPC) environments such as bioinformatics, manufacturing and national defense. As more users choose to deploy Linux in the data center as a viable platform for high-productivity computing, NetVault allows customers to migrate to Linux without sacrificing their data protection strategies. Together, the alliance raises the bar in redefining the limits of performance and scalability on Linux.

"Whether you implement Linux in the small-to-medium enterprise environment or 512-way 64-bit high-performance Altix environment, it's the same core product in NetVault that reliably scales to meet your data protection needs," said Andrew Bowles, director, Strategic Alliances at BakBone Software. "Our global collaboration with SGI extends BakBone's support for the Linux platform into the data center. The SGI Altix 3000 family with Intel Itanium 2 processors and its robust Linux implementation offers further proof of Linux's ability to meet the most demanding customer environments."

BakBone Software utilizes Linux as the base development platform for NetVault, which ensures that the entire NetVault product stack runs natively on Linux. By combining BakBone's data protection expertise with the new SGI Altix 3000 server, customers receive industry-leading performance provided by Linux on the Intel Itanium 2 platform. Through BakBone's advanced data back up recovery solution for storage networks, customers will be able to back up and restore greater amounts of data with less disruption and increased protection of critical information. BakBone's support of Altix allows further adoption of Linux in production HPC environments.

"Today's announcement reinforces our commitment to evolving the scalability, performance and reliability of Linux for mission critical environments," said Anneke Dempsey, senior director of Global Alliances, SGI. "Working with BakBone Software helps us assure our customers that their data protection will not be compromised. This enables customers to take advantage of Linux on the Intel Itanium 2 processor-based platform for SGI Altix 3000 to pursue the most advanced implementations in environments that require increased computing power, and support for large memory, which is critical to high-demand application performance."

"The shared memory architecture of the SGI Altix system allows SGI customers to take the fullest advantage of the Intel Itanium 2 processor," said Melissa Laird, general manager, Solutions Enabling Division, Intel Corporation. "Together, SGI and BakBone now make it possible for Linux users to deploy Intel Itanium 2 processors in the most critical HPC environments. We're pleased to have BakBone as an Early Access Program member."

The most advanced Linux server to run the Linux OS, SGI Altix is a true 64-bit high-performance computing (HPC) platform that leverages the advantages of open source computing with up to 64 powerful Intel Itanium 2 processors in a single node -- and up to 512 in a supercluster configuration with global shared memory. The SGI Altix family of servers combines industry-standard 64-bit Linux with the Intel Itanium 2 processor family and SGI NUMAflex(TM) architecture to enable global shared memory systems from a few to hundreds of processors with up to 4 terabytes of shared memory, which is a first for Linux OS-based computing.
