Two Tacoma, Wash., Port Commissioners Face Election Opposition
Posted on: Tuesday, 2 August 2005, 18:00 CDT
Aug. 2--Two people will run against longtime Port of Tacoma Commissioners Ted Bottiger and Dick Marzano in this November's general election.
Deborah Johnston, chief of the natural and cultural resources branch in public works at Fort Lewis, will face Bottiger for a seat on the five-member commission. Bottiger, the commission's president, has held his seat since 1997.
Johnston, 50, of Tacoma said her biology background would be helpful to the commission, especially in relation to environmental cleanup projects going on in Commencement Bay. She has never held an elected position before.
David Hyres is set to run against Marzano, who has been on the commission since 1995. Hyres, 44, of Bonney Lake, works as a port security specialist for the Department of Homeland Security and the Coast Guard. His interests in security and development prompted him to run, he said.
The port has experienced significant growth and development, "but all you need is a couple terrorist incidents and the shippers will go to other ports," he said.
Hyres spent 22 years as an Army officer before retiring a year and a half ago.
Port of Tacoma Commissioner Connie Bacon is also up for election this fall. She is running uncontested.
