The Discovery Channel Telescope at Lowell Observatory Designed with progeCAD
From the collaboration between Lowell Observatory, the largest private, non-profit astronomical research institution in the United States, and Discovery Communications Inc. is accomplished the $44 Million Discovery Channel Research Telescope designed with progeCAD.
(PRWEB) November 24, 2010
The DCT is a 14 ft research class telescope situated at an elevation of 7,800 feet atop an ancient cinder cone approximately 40 miles southeast of Flagstaff, Arizona at a site called Happy Jack. It will significantly advance Lowell’s capabilities in astronomical research and just important, the partnership with Discovery Communications, whose current operations include 29 global networks in over 180 countries, will bring the fascinating world of astronomical science and education to more than 1.6 billion people every day.
Construction of the DCT began in 2005 with completion and early science operations expected in 2012.
At this phase of the project, DCT engineers, technicians, and contractors are engaged in detailed design work that demands the use of powerful and reliable CAD software tools.
After evaluating various CAD software options with respect to performance, price, custom features, and technical support, progeCAD 2010 Professional was judged the best choice.
DCT engineering and technical staff confirms that progeCAD Professional delivers highly reliable and robust performance thus improving the ease and speed of design work.
progeCAD United States, an Authorized Distributor of progeSOFT products, has been working with the observatory since 2005 to deliver continual upgrades ensuring the Discovery Channel Telescope designers had the most current progeCAD technology.
Finally, progeSOFT’s proven commitment to supporting educational institutions such as Lowell Observatory yields additional value and confidence in our choice of progeCAD.
Lowell Observatory expects to continue using progeCAD Professional to support long term operations of the Discovery Channel Telescope. New instrumentation, system modifications, and electro-mechanical improvements are all likely to be developed in part via progeSOFT product solutions.
“We are greatly pleased that such a prestigious institution like Lowell Observatory chose our software and we are proud to have made our contribution to realization of this important project, the Discovery Channel Telescope” announced Damiano Croci, progeCAD sales director “We express our particular appreciation to progeCAD US for support and assistance offered to the Lowell observatory staff in making their choice of technologies to implement.”
progeCAD is a Professional, native DWG 2D/3D CAD, supplied with Applications, Libraries and Services at a remarkably low cost. progeCAD enterprise, executive and founding member of the IntelliCAD® Technology Consortium has been developing CAD software for over 23 years.
Discovery Communications is the world’s number one nonfiction media company reaching more than 1.5 billion cumulative subscribers in over 180 countries.
Lowell Observatory, founded in 1894, is one of the oldest observatories in the United States. It hosts 70,000 visitors per year and operates several important astronomical researches. Lowell Observatory’s astronomers conduct research on a wide range of solar system and astrophysical topics. In addition they design and build custom instrumentation for use on Lowell’s telescopes, such as Discovery Channel Telescope in partnership with Discovery Communications Inc.
