iPhone Application Makes Brazilian Birdwatching Easier

December 3, 2010

SAO PAULO, Dec. 3, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — An innovative app for Brazilian birdwatching, named Brazilian Birds – Volume 1 is now available for download at Apple Store. The app comprises information, pictures and songs of 345 catalogued birds of the Atlantic Forest, a Brazilian biome.

This is an initiative of the Brazilian Sustainable Planet Portal (www.planetasustentavel.com.br), by Editora Abril, supported by the World Wide Fund For Nature in Brazil. The app is available for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, and its download costs US$ 6.99. It is also possible to download on the on-line store a free-trial version with 30 catalogued birds. Part of the income from the sale of the app will be donated to the nature conservation projects of the World Wide Fund For Nature – Brazil.

In December 4th the app will be launched at COP 16 in Cancun during the presentation “Digital Media – How to use social networks and digital tools for sustainability,” conducted by Matthew Shirts, editor-in-chief of National Geographic Brazil, and Caco de Paula, Tourism Nucleus director of Editora Abril.

“Through our application Brazilian Birds – volume 1: Atlantic Forest, the success of Sustainable Planet’s website and social media, we will present to the audience involvement and relationship techniques of new digital tools,” says Shirts. The presentation is part of the agenda of the Ministry of Environment of Brazil at COP 16 and will be held from 5 to 6 PM.

The work by Tomas Sigrist – an illustrator of Brazilian birds who started his career in 1986 – Aves do Brasil, Uma Visao Artistica [Birds from Brazil, an Artistic View] was the basis for the development of the application. Brazil is currently ranked second in the world in bird diversity, right after Colombia, according to statistics of the Brazilian Ornithological Records Committee (www.cbro.org.br).

The mobile application Brazilian Birds – Volume 1 was developed by the Digital Content area of Guia Quatro Rodas, upon request of Sustainable Planet. When birdwatching, the app user may enter data such as prevailing colors and size of the animals to view the data base with images and songs of the birds. 90 songs and 205 pictures of birds from the Atlantic Forest are available.

A description of life habits and scientific names of the birds can also be viewed. The application also informs if the bird seen is among those threatened with extinction. With this application, you can also cooperate with this database. With the geolocalization device, the birding can be precisely registered.

Another possibility is to share the picture of the observed birds in the social networks, together with information on their location, scientific name and description of their life habits. At Twitter, the profile is @avesbrasil, and on Facebook the community is facebook.com/avesbrasil

There is also a version in Portuguese for this application named “Aves do Brasil – Mata Atlantica.”

The Sustainable Planet Portal and the new application Aves do Brasil – Mata Atlantica are sponsored by Editora Abril, CPFL Energia, Bunge, Sabesp, Petrobras, Camargo Correa and Caixa Economica Federal.
