A transportation bill passed last week by Congress not only includes billions of dollars for Oregon's highways, bridges and light-rail lines but also $16 million for a transportation center at Portland State University.

The Center for Transportation Studies, established in 1966 and housed in PSU's College of Urban and Public Affairs, will receive $2 million in 2005 and $3.5 million each year after that through 2009 from the $286.5 billion federal highway bill to fund transportation research, education and outreach programs.

Portland State will collaborate with the University of Oregon, Oregon State University and Oregon Institute of Technology to maintain the center, and also will seek aid from the Oregon Department of Transportation.

PSU faculty at the center come from the university's Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science. The center offers five graduate degree programs in transportation and planning and has awarded more than 50 such degrees since 1998. Center faculty teach more than 25 graduate courses.

The center's mission, according to PSU is to stimulate and conduct multidisciplinary research on transportation issues, (facilitate) the dissemination of information and (encourage) the implementation of research results.
