Executive careers consultancy The UK Knack Group is unable to confirm at this stage just how many jobs will be created by one of central London’s most ambitious new building projects, but the Group’s Managing Director is excited at the magnitude of the proposed British Land development.
“Six of the UK’s biggest industrial conglomerates have tendered for consideration, and they’re no minnows in the construction pond, either,” he said.
The 47-storey inverted wedge-shaped tower, costing 250 million pounds and already nick-named the Cheese Grater, is to be erected at 122, Leadenhall Street on a site that was cleared back in 2007 with the demolition of the existing building.
The UK Knack group has confirmed that the six aspirants to this prestigious construction appointment include Mace, the company behind the Shard at London Bridge; Sir Robert McAlpine, whose firm was responsible for Emirates Stadium; and Skanska, of Gherkin fame. Also showing keenness to be in contention are Bovis Lend Lease, Laing O’Rourke and Balfour Beatty.
British Land has said that it intends narrowing the bidders to a short list, then announcing the winner of the 250 million pound project hopefully as early as January.
“With building on this scale again in the national capital, there can be little doubt that the economy’s on the rebound in a big way,” says The UK Knack Group Managing Director, adding, “it augurs so well for more employment, and that is great.”
Also on the drawing board for London are Bishopsgate Tower, Heron Tower, 100 Bishopsgate, 20 Fenchurch Street and the Shard.
