Tekscan Develops A Large, High Resolution Tactile Pressure Sensor for Capturing Tire Footprint Pressure Measurements

December 23, 2010

Boston, MA (PRWEB) December 22, 2010

Tekscan announces the release of the TV8408 and TVR8408 TireScan̢Ң Systems, which now make it possible to capture and analyze even larger tire footprint pressure patterns of rolling tires than was ever possible. With the addition of this sensor system, Tekscan brings to the tire testing market the most comprehensive array of tire footprint pressure measurement systems ever designed to measure passenger, truck, bus, off-road, agricultural, and aircraft tire footprint pressure patterns.

Assess Tire Tread Design as the Tire is in Motion

Understanding what is happening to a tire while it is in motion is critical to designing a better performing tire. The TireScan system allows engineers to drive a tire over a sensor and capture invaluable point of contact data, such as area and pressure distribution. Perimeter area, cross sectional pressure profile, footprint length, and width measurements can also be made using the system’s powerful data analysis software.

Collected data can be used to:

  •     Evaluate and compare tire designs and tread patterns,
  •     Assess different materials and rubber compound formulations,
  •     Conduct quality control measurements,
  •     Perform competitive benchmarking,
  •     Assess the impact of vehicle suspension.

Evaluate Larger Tires

The sensor’s generous sensing area enables larger tires that might have ground contact patches measuring 402.3 mm x 433.2 mm (15.84 in. x 17.06 in.) to be easily captured and evaluated. With over 133,400 individual pressure sensing elements (sensels) and a spatial resolution of 1.14 mm (0.045 in.), the sensor ensures that even the smallest detail will be captured.

Conduct Testing in Indoor and Outdoor Settings

The system’s USB connection gives test engineers incredible flexibility when it comes to system set-up and testing. Testing can be conducted within a test lab environment, garage, or in a variety of roadway and outdoor settings. If more traditional testing methods are preferred, the system can easily be mounted onto various tire loading machines.
