Kodak to Close Sacramento, Calif., Facility

Aug. 4--Eastman Kodak Co. is closing its Sacramento film-processing center as it speeds up the transition to digital photography.
The 93-employee facility will close by Sept. 23, company spokesman David Lanzillo said Wednesday.
The Sacramento site is one of several dozen Kodak will close, part of a 10,000-employee layoff announced in July.
The Rochester, N.Y., photo conglomerate has been struggling for years as consumers switch to digital cameras.
Last month the company reported a $146 million quarterly loss and said it planned to trim $1 billion in operating costs from its film-photography business. Chief Executive Antonio Perez said the company had just passed the point at which Kodak's digital-imaging revenue surpassed film sales.
"We need to establish an end point to this transformation, and we need to get there soon," he told investment analysts.
The Sacramento site, located on Main Avenue, was opened in 1983 and had gone through several owners before Kodak bought it in 1994 from the Thrifty Drug chain, Lanzillo said. The facility provides overnight film processing for drug stores and other retailers.
The site's work will be transferred to a Kodak plant in Oregon. Customers in the Sacramento area will still get overnight service, Lanzillo said.
The big global layoff at Kodak comes on top of a 12,000-worker layoff the company announced in early 2004.
