Excerpt from report by Russian Ekho Moskvy radio on 5 August
[Presenter] Our radio listener and former submariner Oleg Bubnov has said in an interview with our radio station that the military will not succeed without outside assistance.
[Bubnov] If it is true that the propeller got entangled and the submersible is stuck on the sea bed, it is very unlikely they will be able to get out of it on their own in their [word indistinct] [diving] suits. [Passage omitted]
In a word, it is a very time-consuming operation that will take several days if not weeks. The only hope, in my view, lies with the Japanese because they have the right equipment, they are very advanced in this respect.
In our navy, I am afraid, things are in such a poor state - [changes tack] Even when I served in the navy, it was already an utter shambles, and that was back in the days of the Soviet Union. Now, I believe, things are totally neglected.
