January 21, 2011

Usage of Optimum WiFi, a Free Benefit for Optimum Online Customers, Increased More Than 500%, With 8 Million Sessions in 2009 Compared to 50 Million in 2010

Bethpage, NY (Vocus/PRWEB) January 20, 2011

Cablevision Systems Corporation (NYSE: CVC) is celebrating the eleventh and final day of its “11 Days of Optimum Value to Kick Off 2011″ campaign by encouraging its Optimum Online customers to take advantage of Optimum WiFi, the nation’s largest and most advanced WiFi network based on geographic coverage, providing free and fast wireless Internet access in thousands of public locations across Cablevision’s service area, such as shopping centers, on main streets and train platforms, in parks, and at sports fields.

Optimum WiFi is now more popular than ever, enabling 50 million user sessions in 2010, a more than 500% increase over 2009′s eight million sessions. Additionally, Optimum WiFi is now available in thousands of indoor locations across Cablevision’s service area, in addition to the outdoor network. The “Optimum Value” campaign, which launched on January 5 and concludes today, has highlighted some of the most popular benefits customers receive by subscribing to one or more of the Optimum digital services — iO TV®, Optimum Online® and Optimum Voice®.

“Usage of Optimum WiFi exploded in 2010, as our network continued to expand along with the exploding popularity of WiFi-enabled devices such as the iPad and smartphones, and particularly given the increasing demands on overburdened cellular data networks,” said Kevin Curran, Cablevision’s senior vice president of wireless development. “We have built a data fast lane for Optimum customers that now extends to a variety of major venues and indoor locations as well ““ from the Nassau Coliseum to local coffee shops and eateries.”

Optimum WiFi is free for Optimum Online customers, who can access Optimum WiFi using portable WiFi-enabled devices, like the iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry and laptop computers using a simple sign-on screen. Once a customer logs into the service by entering their Optimum ID and password, the network delivers speeds of up to 3.0 Mbps downstream and 1.5 Mbps upstream. Cablevision customers are using Optimum WiFi to access the Internet more than six millions times per month, on average.

Optimum WiFi spans tens of thousands of access points across the company’s tri-state service area. Optimum WiFi is broadly available in high-traffic and commercial locations like downtown areas, parks and other locations across Cablevision’s New York, New Jersey and Connecticut service areas. The network also includes outdoor availability at almost all of the Long Island Railroad and Metro North railroad platforms and parking lots in Cablevision’s service area. More information on Optimum WiFi, including detailed coverage maps, is available at http://www.optimumwifi.com.

Optimum WiFi also offers an “Automatic Sign In” feature that makes using the Optimum WiFi network easier than ever. Users can sign in to Optimum WiFi just once, and their WiFi-enabled device will automatically connect to the network at any of the thousands of locations where Optimum WiFi is available.
