The Jekyll Island Authority Welcomes Improved Cell Phone Service on the Island
JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga., Jan. 25, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Early December the Jekyll Island Authority Board approved a request for two leases with New Cingular Wireless PCS, LLC in order to improve coverage of AT&T cell phone service on Jekyll Island. The antennas will provide 3G capabilities and be placed on two additional water towers, one on the North and another at the South end of the island. These towers are expected to be in-service sometime during the first quarter of 2011.
Currently AT&T covers 97% of all Americans. Many AT&T smartphones can switch automatically between 3G data and Wi-Fi connectivity making the addition of antennas to the island a vast improvement for residents and guests.
“Improving the coverage available on our island is critical, we frequently host large business groups and conventions, especially since we’ve opened new facilities in the Historic District Convention Campus,” said Eric Garvey, Chief Communications Officer for the Jekyll Island Authority.
New Cingular Wireless PCS, LLC, the company providing the AT&T antennas have been approved for a five year lease term with four successive five year renewal options. They currently have antennas on the water tower located behind the Quality Inn on Jekyll Island.
