New Bridge Forces Detour on Burton

Posted on: Friday, 5 August 2005, 18:00 CDT

A portion of Northeast Burton Road will be closed to traffic for two weeks, beginning Wednesday, while a bridge spanning Burnt Bridge Creek is replaced.

The road will be closed at both ends of the bridge, in Meadowbrook Marsh Park on the 8800 block of Burton Road.

Motorists heading east on Burton Road through the closure area will be directed to 86th Avenue as a detour route to Mill Plain and Fourth Plain boulevards. Westbound through traffic will be routed to 112th Avenue and on to Mill Plain and Fourth Plain boulevards or state Highway 500.

Motorists who need to get to a destination between 86th and 112th avenues will be permitted to travel on Burton Road up to each side of the bridge construction area. A temporary crossing over the creek will be provided for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The closure also will require a detour for C-Tran's Burton Route No. 30.

Buses headed east will turn right on 86th Avenue, left on Mill Plain Boulevard, left on 98th Avenue and right on Burton Road. Westbound buses will turn left on 98th Avenue, right on Mill Plain Boulevard, right on 87th Avenue and left on Burton Road.

Police, fire and ambulance officials have been alerted to the closure and have made plans for alternate routes through the area.

City officials concluded that closing the section of Burton Road was the best way to provide safe conditions for workers, pedestrians and vehicles and to move the project toward completion in late September.

An alternate plan that would have allowed for one lane of traffic, with frequent stops and delays, would have required an estimated three months to complete.

The replacement bridge will be 30 feet long and 60 feet wide, more than twice the width of the existing bridge. It will offer a safer route for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians, all of whom currently share a narrow road surface.

The bridge replacement is one of the final steps remaining in the $6.5 million second phase of the Burton Road-Northeast 28th Street project, which began in late 2004.

The project includes a new road surface, bicycle lanes, a dedicated center left-turn lane, traffic signals, curbs, sidewalks, stormwater drainage and street lights.
