FireWire's Spark May Have Returned Reports In-Stat/MDR

Posted on: Monday, 9 June 2003, 06:00 CDT

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 9, 2003--High-tech market research firm In-Stat/MDR (http://www.instat.com) reports that the past year has been an eventful one for 1394. In the PC space, 1394a has been integrated into core logic chipsets produced by both Silicon Integrated Systems and NVIDIA and, the first PCs with the new high-speed 1394b standard were released by Apple in early 2003. This should lead to 1394b-enabled PC peripheral devices, such as external hard drives and recordable DVD drives, coming to market by the end of 2003.

"In the consumer electronics market, there were two announcements in the past year that should have a major impact on the penetration of 1394 in this market," said Brian O'Rourke, a senior analyst with In-Stat/MDR. "In August 2002, the FCC declared that, by July 2007, all TV sets with screen sizes of 13 inches and above must have built-in high-definition digital tuners, which will benefit 1394. In addition, the NCTA and the CEA agreed to mandate 1394 as one of the two digital interfaces between digital cable set top boxes and digital televisions."

In-Stat/MDR has also found that:

-- PCs will be driven by the notebook category with 1394 growing

in both the consumer and commercial segments of the notebook

market. Growth will be modest in the consumer desktop, and

close to non-existent in commercial desktops.

-- 1394 growth in PC peripherals will be seen in external hard

drives and recordable DVD drives, but growth will be negative

in printers and scanners.

-- 1394 growth in the CE market will be seen in substantial

growth in digital televisions, set top boxes and DVD

recorders.

-- The automotive market will see the first penetration of 1394

networks in the aftermarket in Japan over the next three

years, with factory-installed networks debuting in 2006.

The report, "IEEE 1394: FireWire's Spark Returns?" (#IN030582MI), contains analysis and five-year forecasts for all 1394-enabled products. Responses on 1394 from In-Stat/MDR's annual Residential Technology Survey are also included in the report. Brief profiles of major 1394 silicon and IP suppliers are also provided.
