OpenFabrics Alliance Introduces Memberships for Academic Institutions and Individual System Administrators and Programmers
The OpenFabrics Alliance (OFA) today announced two new membership levels that will be available beginning from the 2011 OpenFabrics Alliance International Workshop taking place in Monterey on April 3-6, 2011. The Alliance now has five membership levels ““ Promoter, Adopter, Supporter, Academic and Individual ““ and is a growing community of leading chip manufacturers, database providers, national laboratories, network equipment manufacturers, server and storage vendors, ISVs, and end users all actively involved in the development and use of OFED.

The OpenFabrics Alliance (OFA), an open source community focused on developing the OpenFabrics Enterprise Distribution (OFEDTM) for high-performance networking applications, today announced two new membership levels that will be available beginning from the 2011 OpenFabrics Alliance International Workshop taking place in Monterey on April 3-6, 2011.
The Alliance now has five membership levels ““ Promoter, Adopter, Supporter, Academic and Individual ““ and is a growing community of leading chip manufacturers, database providers, national laboratories, network equipment manufacturers, server and storage vendors, ISVs, and end users all actively involved in the development and use of OFED.
The two new membership levels include:
- OFA Academic Member ““ designed for academic and research institutions that wish to use OFED, participate in OFA working groups and stay informed about the work of the Alliance. Includes all of the benefits listed for Individual members, and applies to all employees of the organization. Dues are US$2,000 annual membership.
- OFA Individual Member ““ intended for technical personnel who work for end user organizations and not for those who work for vendors of either hardware or software. Individuals within organizations that use OFED or are thinking about deploying OFED in their working environment will see valuable benefits from this membership level, including: participation in OFA working groups, notification of OFED daily build status, involvement in interoperability events and the development of test suites for OFED, and access to all OFED developer tools and user forums. Dues are US$200 annual membership.
“Texas Advanced Computing Center is a long time user of OFED on several generations of clusters. The software provides the highest level of performance and lowest latency for our researchers’ computing and storage needs,” said Dan Stanzione, deputy director, Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at the University of Texas, Austin. “With the Academic level of membership, TACC technologists will now be able to work directly with OFA’s top flight developers, maintainers and release management workgroups as new capabilities ““ such as RDMA over Ethernet and higher performance storage software infrastructure ““ become available for the scientific “ËœBig Data’ influx we are experiencing.”
“The latency benefits of using OFED for high frequency trading and market data systems are well known to the very competitive financial and exchange communities,” said Christoph Lameter, member of the Linux Foundation. “The Individual level membership enables companies and government agencies to become more involved with the OFA development community through their individual employees. This brings value back to their organizations through increased personal knowledge, wider community contacts and broader developer experience.”
“OFA members have the opportunity to influence the direction of OFED in high performance computing ““ where it is currently deployed in nearly 50 percent of the TOP500 systems ““ and the enterprise data center,” said Jim Ryan, chair of the OpenFabrics Alliance. “We’ve introduced new membership levels to better engage with the Academic community and Individual highly skilled technologists.”
